Itinerary
After you have been greeted by your tour guide and driver at your hotel lobby then head Northwest toward BANTEAY CHMAR temple which was built between (1181-1220AD) by King JAYAVARMAN VII designed with main temple surrounded by a satellite one and consecrated to the memory of prince SRINTRA KUMARA his son and to the 4 of the prince companions in arms who had saved his life in battle against the Cham. BANTEAY CHMAR temple is a large complex with the main structure measuring 770mx690m mand of grey sandstone and on the eastern side of this temple there is a main made reservoir called Eastern MEBON 1700mx800m was excavated to store up to 2 millions cubic meters of water which could be used for the irrigation. The reservoir is bordered with Laterite steps to facilitate the fetching of water and at its western end there was a landing stage from which worshipers could cross to the temple on the Island by boats.
Mahayana Buddhist and HUNDU religion were Coexist in this temple. A unique depicted scene of multi arms AVALOKITESVARA is on the wall of the western gallery and 8 of other LOKESVARA images were depicted in the reliefs facing the sunset beside the western gatehouse of the third enclosure. The temple complex was also designed to reflect HINDU theology and astrology. The main towers were build on the axis of 4 directions encircle with rectangular walls and galleries and surrounded by the moat, representing cosmic mount MERU the home of HINDU gods and axis of the universe – the main temple bears 4 gate flanked with images of DEVATA and giants holding NAGA on the four main cardinal directions representing the sacred HINDU universe. BANTEAY CHMAR site has been lost in the jungle for many yours and very few major restoration procedures have been implemented to the site. Most of its ruins are still intact and in situ, revealing, its authenticity as a whole.
Sine 2005 the local government in collaboration with world monument fund and the American Global Heritage fund have been worked to remove dangerous vegetation, preparing a master conservation plan for protection and preservation of the relief galleries and stabilization of the structure.
